5 Essential Dressing Tips to Keep in Mind Before a Photoshoot for Enhanced Outcomes in Your Photographs

by Andrea, Premium Vienna Headshots

"What should I wear to the photoshoot?" - This is actually the most asked question I get, when someone books a session with me.

Keep it simple! In every way. Considering style, colors, patterns, jewelry, accessories...

  1. Style - Choose attire that complements your figure, fits well, and feels comfortable. For women, a long dress or skirt can add a graceful flow to the image—it's not essential, but it's a lovely touch. For men, a shirt or sweater can be an excellent choice. For headshots, a turtleneck suits everyone, while a suit or a simple shirt are also good alternatives.

  2. Color - Choose solid, understated colors like earth tones, muted gemstones, monochrome, beige, and taupe. Neutral hues such as black, white, gray, beige, and navy are always safe choices. For outfits with low contrast, combine a pure white shirt with bottoms in lighter shades or a pure black shirt with bottoms in darker hues. For multiple people in the picture, aim to coordinate the colors and style.

  3. Pattern - This option is generally not advisable. The goal is to connect with the client through facial expressions and eye contact, not through printed material. While it can occasionally be nice, solid colors are usually preferred.

  4. Jewelry - Please ensure it remains very decent, or feel free to omit it altogether.

  5. Accessories - It's a great idea to omit it, only if it's not an essential part of your image.

How to Take Your Own Headshot

by Andrea, Premium Vienna Headshots

Let's begin at the very start: you need a camera. If you're taking your own headshot, I assume you have some knowledge of camera setup, lighting, and composition. So, we can either skip this part or opt to hire a professional. Remember, no selfies, please.

I need a headshot. It's ironic, considering I'm a headshot photographer without a proper picture of myself. How can that be? I'm always the one behind the camera and the computer. Now, I have to step into the client's shoes.

My hair looks its best on the second day after washing it, so I need to plan my hair care routine two days in advance to avoid excessive flyaways.

The big day has arrived. I started with a run followed by a cold shower, which is always great for stimulating endorphins and bringing a healthy color to the cheeks. I completed my morning routine, which includes brushing my teeth, my hair, applying facial cream, and this time I added shaping of my eyebrows to ensure I look fantastic in photos. I don't wear makeup; I dislike the feel of it on my skin. So, I opt out of makeup and prefer to spend a little more time on retouching.

Arrived at the studio, fortunately, everything was prepared for the headshot. I visited the restroom to ensure I was completely relaxed and checked in the mirror that everything was impeccable. Then, I used my remote control to take the pictures. Here we go:

  1. I regret applying cream to my face this morning; it's left me looking overly shiny. I had to blot the excess with a tissue.

  2. It took me about 30 minutes to feel comfortable, even without someone behind the camera. I empathize with all of you who come to me and simply stand there while I look at you.

  3. I took some silly shots to loosen up and start smiling naturally.

  4. My face is not symmetrical due to a broken nose, so taking photos from the side can help conceal it.

  5. My mouth is shifted to one side; the only way to solve it is by smiling broadly.

  6. My neck appears unusually long, which looks quite odd. Normally, I would ask clients to bring a turtleneck, but I was so preoccupied with my eyebrows that I completely forgot about it. Fortunately, I had a scarf in the studio, which I used to cover my neck in a few shots.

I completed the studio part, which took around an hour. The final selection of the headshot was done at home, on my own. It's quite an awkward task to choose one's own headshot. Typically, I do this with the client, assisting them in finding the ideal image that represents not only themselves but also the others I represent in this process...
